On 28th October,
Maesgeirchen youngsters took part in a clean-up operation in
the Afon Cegin area. The Cegin, which borders the estate, is
a haven rich in wildlife. For the past year, it has been the
subject of a pioneering partnership between the Environment
Agency, Maesgeirchen Communities First, Keep Wales Tidy &
Gwynedd Council. Each body has its own special contribution
to make to the project: significant capital has been put into
developing access to the river & maintaining the banks.
Most important of all, though, is the support given by local
young people in the ongoing work to keep the area litter-free.
This year, the group
kept out of the river itself - because of high, fast-flowing
water - & concentrated on the banks. 43 took part &
collected a mountain of rubbish - much of which was debris from
the recent storms. This was then collected & disposed of
by Gwynedd. The event was followed by a mass visit to the local
"chippy"!
Paul Hockaday of Communities
First said, "We are very grateful to Gwynedd for their
prompt assistance on the day, & to Lee Oliver of Keep Wales
Tidy for his technical advice & practical help".
MATRA Chair Dorothy
Bulled added, "We are glad to see that this has become
a regular event. MaesG youngsters are setting an example to
others when it comes to looking after community woodlands".
The Environment Agency
will be overseeing another clean-up day before Christmas. This
will deal with any debris which the autumn rains carry to Port
Penrhyn.
